IMPACT OF ENGLISH ON THE SERBIAN GRAPHOPHONOLOGICAL SYSTEM

It is a distinctive feature of the Internet communication that the interlocutors make their statements uncommon, thus showing their inventiveness and attracting other participants’ attention. This can be achieved by misspelling certain graphemes intentionally and/or using certain signs that visually resemble the letters they replace. The goal of this paper is to classify and analyze the ways statements are made uncommon, particularly those cases which reflect the English grapho-phonological system. Our analysis also includes the cases which are not influenced by the English grapho-phonological system. The corpus comprises asynchronous Internet discourse which implies that interlocutors have enough time to write the messages properly before posting them. However, existing research has shown that the Internet discourse is devoid of standard language norm and marked by absolute freedom of expression in all linguistic segments, including those that should be resistant to any alterations and influences of foreign languages. The corpus has proved to be really fruitful since it yielded a great number of examples of impact of the English language on the Serbian grapho-phonological system.
