Abstract

This article discusses the central question of how to deal with the diversity and the richness of existing theories in mathematics education research. In the framework “Different theoretical perspectives and approaches in research in mathematics education” we will indicate why diversity is a challenge for the academic community of mathematicians, mathematics education implementers and researches in mathematic education. Also, we will mention some important aspects and issues which have occured in discussions of Working groups at conferences of ERME (CERME 3 (2003) – CERME 6(2009)) such as: problem of hidden assumptions, individual/social impact and challenge to constructivism and assumptions concerning the nature of mathematical knowledge that are crucial for the analysis of similarities and differentes between theoretical approaches. To do this, we propose ways to structure building and discussing theories and we contrast the demand for integrating theories with the idea of networking theories.
