Abstract

Mythical physiognomy of the monstrous Cyclops, although extensively discussed in Homer's "Odyssey", functions as an unparalleled inter-textual pattern in world literary production. Despite the fact that in the general human subconscious Cyclops dominates as the authentic symbol of incredible cruelty, in the works of prominent writers this symbol is intertwined with anti-militarist resistance or existential despair.

In this context, there is the novel "Cyclops" by Croatian essayists, writer and playwright Ranko Marinkovic. The writer's astute hero Melchior fought to expel the tyrant in pre-war Zagreb - the fear and Marinkovic in this work criticizes pathogenic depravity using delicate irony and sarcasm.

Polyphonic dialogue structure occupies a prime location in the novel, and narrative frame appears as a solid background of associative data.

Marinkovic's complex literary work shows European spiritual heritage, emphasizes condensed spirituality of mental game and sublime catharsis.
